INTERVIEW: M·A·C makeup artist Live Apelland

Maria: For people who doesn’t know about you. Who are you?
Live: I’m a 30 years old makeup artist and I live in Oslo, Norway. Most of my time I “eat, sleep and breath” makeup and MAC Cosmetics – where I work as Nordic Training Manager. I love working in the busy and creative environment back stage and on photo shoots, as much as I love teaching and sharing my knowledge with anyone willing to listen. When I’m not working it’s family and music that comes first….and shopping of course!
Maria: Tell me about your career. When and where did it start growing?
Live: For the first 6 years of my career I worked in London. I started off working mostly with TV and I’m really glad I did! It taught me a lot about lighting, textures and creating dimensions in a makeup that makes me a better fashion makeup artist today. After 5 years I decided to move home to Norway to work for MAC. I knew MAC was the right place for me to develop and learn more about the fashion industry. Through MAC I’ve had opportunities to take my skills to the next level and work with some of the best makeup artists in the world. The last 4 years have been amazing taking me and my makeup kit all over the world to places like Milan, Paris and even New Delhi!
Maria: Do you believe in beeing in the ”right time, at the right place”?
Live: It definitely helps! But I think it’s more about hard work and being able to understand what’s expected from you in different situations.

Maria: What is your best advice for a beginner in the business?
Live: Remember that you are only as good as the last job you did! Take any opportunity that comes your way and execute every one like it’s the most important job you’ll ever have. And never be late!
Maria: In five words. Tell me about Fashion Week in Milan?
Live: PEACHY – 90’s GLAMOUR – LASHES – METALLIC – GELATO
Maria: Where do you get most of your inspiration?
Live: I love art books and old magazines – and I truly get inspired by the face of the person I’m working with. Everyone is unique and beautiful!

Maria: When you prepared for fashion week in Milan. Tell me whats the most important thing?
Live: Before Milan I always look into what’s been seen on the catwalk in New York and London. It’s also important to recap trends from the last 2 seasons so you understand where the designers and key makeup artists are coming from. And it’s really important to try to get my makeup kit as small as possible – but I still haven’t managed to get it under 25kg.
Maria: Who do you look up to in the makeup industry?
Live: I truly admire Alex Box! She’s an incredible creative artist but at the same time such a humble and nice person.
Maria: Who would you die to work with? Anyone!
Live: I’ve been so lucky to work with many of the top makeup artists in the world, like Charlotte Tilbury and Val Garland. But I’m missing Kabuki, I would love to work with him!
